Social Media in Education

When Tony Richards visited us at Notre Dame he presented us with some big challenges around how we are using social media - we're probably right on the tipping point of this technology being taken up more and more in education. At university level it is certainly happening already, schools might be next. In fact some schools are already embracing this technology and using it to improve and enhance learning and teaching.

Of course there are (and should be) concerns and time taken to consider the ethical and professional implications of engaging with students via a social media platform, just as there are and should be similar time given to thinking about how we, as teachers, interact with our students in person, via email or over the phone.

This is a quote from a talk given by Michael Carr-Gregg - it was subsequently proven to be untrue and this blog post is an interesting read, it investigates the implications for teachers and outlines the REAL recommendations by the VIT which certainly wouldn't automatically de-register teachers who 'Friend' students in Facebook.

“Victorian Teachers Who ‘Friend’ Students on Facebook will be Automatically De-registered by the VIT”

Tony Richards' Blog - Some great writing about current issues and ideas in ICT.
